Why you should upgrade to a Tankless water heater – Water heaters represent a significant investment, and the appliance will be in your house for at least ten years or more. So when it is time to get a new system for your home or replace the existing one, there are various aspects you need to take into accounts, such as efficiency, longevity, cost, and more.

At A Clear Choice Plumbing & Heating, We always encourage our clients to get complete information about the different types of appliances available in the market before making their final decision. Here we take a look at the differences between the tankless and standard systems.

The Differences

1. Standard/Storage Tank Water Heater

A standard water heater can store and preheat 30 to 50 gallons of water in its tank. This preheated water is used whenever you shower, do the laundry, or wash the dishes. Once the tank becomes empty, it refills and reheats the water.

Pros:

Lower initial costs – The water heater installation cost can be almost 50% of a tankless water heater.
Straightforward and inexpensive to replace – Fewer installation complications mean there’s much less that can go wrong.

Cons:

  • Higher energy consumption means higher utility bills – This heater heats and reheats water at the pre-set temperature no matter your water needs. The continual reheating raises your utility bills-especially during the winter months.
  • Bigger unit and more challenging to place- It cannot be placed outdoors and occupies more room indoors.
  • You can run out of hot water, depending on how many people are using it.
  • Shorter lifespan of about 10 to 15 years

2. Tankless/ On-Demand Water Heater

A tankless water heater can operate either on gas or electricity. It warms up water on demand when you require it and does not have any tank for water storage.

Pros:

  • Long Term Money Saver- As per Energy.gov, for properties that utilize 41 gallons/less of heated water every day, tankless water heaters offer 24% to 34% more energy-efficiency than standard water heaters.
  • Have a very compact footprint and can be placed in even tight spaces. You can also install them on an exterior wall.
  • Has a lifespan of 20 years or more, which is double that of a standard water heater.
  • You get hot water on demand- Up to two to three gallons per minute.

Cons:

This system’s initial installed costs are higher depending on which model you opt for and who handles it.
When you retrofit these units, it adds to the installation costs even further.
